North Carolina: Benjamin Brown and Winnifred (Rountree) Brown of Pitt County, NC

Benjamin Brown of Pitt Co. NC was the son of Benjamin Brown and Elizabeth Mooring, his wife, of Pitt Co. He was born January 2, 1798 and died July 9, 1862. On January 2, 1823, he married Winnifred Rountree, the daughter of Jesse Rountree and Winnifred Jenkins, his wife, also of Pitt Co. Winnifred Rountree Brown was born August 5, 1807 and died November 6, 1869 in Pitt Co. We know all this and more because of the love of family and the foresight of Benjamin and Winnifred's youngest child, Sarah Penelope (born November 26, 1843) who compiled and printed, "Family Record, Brown Family, Rountree Family.

The property was divided among the children of Benjamin and Winnifred when Benjamin died. Sarah Penelope and her husband, James Llewellyn Moore, were the last of the family to occupy the house. The photos were taken sometime after the family had left the property.

The plat of the property at the time of the land division in 1868 when compared with a modern day map of Greenville shows the approximate location. Descendants of the Brown family sold the property to be sub-divided into the neighborhoods that exist to this day. The family cemetery was still known in the 1940's, but has been swallowed up by area development and is no longer found.
