John E. Bennett, son of William C. Bennett and Nancy Kersey, his wife, was born about 1849. On May 13, 1872, he married Mary Frances Smith, born May 13,1853 in Henrico Co., Va., daughter of Elias B. Smith and Frances A. Cocke, his wife.
William C. Bennett had been born in Hanover County, but was living in the Richmond-Henrico area as an adult and worked as a boiler maker at Tredegar Iron Works. His son, John, followed in his steps and also worked at Tredegar as an iron moulder.
Elias B. Smith, the father of Mary Frances, was a drayman (a wagon driver) who died young. His widow, Frances, supported herself and her children as a seamstress.Their daughter, Mary Frances, in later years the widow of John Bennett, worked as a dressmaker.
