North Carolina: Jesse Rountree and Rachel (Spivey) Rountree of Pitt County, NC

Jesse Rountree was born June 27, 1765 and died April 12, 1831 in Pitt Co., NC. Jesse Rountree was the son of Jesse Rountree and Rachel Spivey.

Jesse Rountree (b. 1765) married Winnifred Jenkins in January of 1782. Winnifred was the daughter of John Jenkins and Mary Cherry, his wife, of Bertie Co., NC.

The children of Jesse and Winnifred Jenkins Rountree were: Polly, Wright, William, Charles Jenkins, Salley, Rachel, Jesse and Winnifred. Daughter Winnifred was born in 1807 and married Ben Brown of Pitt Co., NC.

Jesse Rountree was a prosperous landowner in Pitt Co. He lived about one mile north of the junction of SR 903 and SR102 and near Rountree's Crossroads. SR1114 is Rountree Rd. The exact location of the home is unknown and the cemetery, as well, is lost, but the church he founded remains: Rountree Christian Church.

NORTH CAROLINA DISCIPLES OF CHRIST

THIS CHURCH AT THE CROSSROADS ON OCTOBER 5, 1832, LED BY ITS PASTOR, GENERAL WILLIAM CLARK, BEGAN THE ORGANIZED MOVEMENT WITHIN NORTH CAROLINA OF THE DISCIPLES OF CHRIST. ASSOCIATED WITH CLARK WERE THE EVANGELISTS JOHN PATRICK DUNN AND ABRAHAM CONGLETON. THESE EFFECTED THE UNION MEETING OF THE DISCIPLES AT LITTLE SISTER, LENIOR COUNTY, MARCH 28-30, 1834. THEIR FIRST COOPERATIVE BODY.

THIS TABLET IS ERECTED TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE HEROIC FOUNDERS OF THIS FAITH BY ROUNTREE CHRISTIAN CHURCH FRIENDS, AND DESCENDENTS OF ITS PIONEER MEMBERS IN THE YEAR 1966.

 

ROUNTREE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

FOUNDED in the year 1827 by JESSE ROUNTREE, Esquire, Beloved Citizen of Pitt County, Patriot of the American Revolution and Donor of this Land and the FIRST CHURCH, known as a CAROLINA DISCIPLE SHRINE, the First Church of their Faith. Born 1765-Died 1840, He lies buried at the Site of His Plantation Manor one half mile Northwest of this place.

In Memory of the Faithful Members of This Church, Restored in 1883 and in 1942, This Tablet is dedicated by His Descendants in the year 1947.
