Charles Henry Rice, Jr., the son of Charles Henry Rice, Sr. and Emily Jane Shell, was born August 1874.
Charles, Sr. was the son of Robert Fleming Rice of Richmond, and his wife, Jane Roach. Emily Shell was the daughter of Edward Hill Shell and wife, Mary Susan Blankenship, who had moved to Richmond from Chesterfield.

Charles Jr. married Elizabeth W. Silvey, 'Lizzie', born September 15, 1875, the daughter of Alexander Washington Silvey and Sarah Ann Fidler of King William County, Va.

Charles and Lizzie married in Richmond on January 7, 1896. Charles operated a grocery on Taylor Street. He died at age 33, leaving Lizzie with 4 young children to rear. Lizzie and her children shared a residence with her widowed mother-in-law, Emily Shell Rice, and her brother-in-law, Robert Fleming Rice, 'Robbie'.
